The Black Sea, connecting the Caucasus, Asia Minor and Europe, is so named because of its hydrogen sulphide content. This is due to the accumulation of micro-organisms at a depth of 200 metres, the latter forming sediments that give the impression of a black bottom.
Curious to learn more about our sea?
Here are some interesting facts about the Black Sea:
- The area of the Black Sea is almost four times larger than that of Bulgaria
The depth to which the sea reaches is 2212 m. It is a strange fact that the maximum depth of the Black Sea is as much as the highest peak of Pl. “Slavyanka” – peak Gotsev or Alibotush, which is 2212 m.
- The location of the Black Sea is one of the most interesting facts about it.
It borders Turkey, Romania, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Russia and Georgia. The sea’s location covers areas between southeastern Europe and Asia, covering an area of more than 159,600 square miles and is the link between the two continents.
The mystery of the origin of the name- “Black Sea”
The name of the sea is considered a little known, but quite interesting fact.
There are many theories about how the sea got this special name. Among the many hypotheses, there is one which states that the Black Sea was called simply “sea” long before it was defined by the Greeks as “inhospitable sea”. Other theories state that the name of the sea originated from the Turks who lost many people in the deep water. They called it Kara, which means “black” in modern Turkish.
Oxygen-free water
A strange fact about the Black Sea is its oxygen-free water. The sea is considered the largest body of water that has immiscible layers of water – a meromictic basin. This also allows objects to be stored in the sea. There is almost no life at depths of more than 200 meters, and the concentration of hydrogen sulfide is high and oxygen is not allowed to penetrate. This prevents materials such as wood and ropes from rotting. So far, very few ships have been found at depths of more than 30-40 meters – according to professional divers, it is difficult to go deep, which means that new wrecks have yet to be discovered, preserved intact.
The Black Sea and Noah’s Ark
An extremely interesting fact or possibly legend about the Black Sea is that after the Great Flood, Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey is believed to be the mooring place of Noah’s Ark.
The water level always remains the same
Another interesting fact about the Black Sea is that the water level in this sea area always remains the same. Since there are no high/low tides, the water level does not fluctuate.
Bonus fact:
The Black Sea is an ideal location for treatment of various lung diseases, detoxification and even just for relaxation. A combination of these can be found at the Grand Hotel Sveti Vlas, which is the ideal place for rest and recuperation.
